Before you can say that a woman's body is really in menopause, it's good to familiarize yourself with the symptoms of perimenopause, meaning the first signs of pre-menopause. <br \/>The age at which women reach menopause can be crucial in terms of overall health, with early menopause being linked to an increased risk of heart disease, but late menopause, on the other hand, is also associated with a higher risk of ovarian cancer.<br \/>In this article, we will detail these terms as well as the manifestations that occur in pre-menopause. Pre-menopause means \"around menopause\" and refers to the period when a woman's body makes the natural transition to menopause. Pre-menopause occurs at different ages, the first signs are likely to appear around the age of 40.<br \/>What is pre-menopause or perimenopause?<br \/>\"Pre-menopause\" and \"perimenopause\" are similar terms, sometimes used interchangeably. The prefix 'pre' means 'before' something, and 'peri' means 'around' or '\u2018nearby\u2019. Technically speaking, a woman is in the premenopausal years before the onset of menopause.<br \/>Some doctors refer to pre-menopause when describing the period between a woman's first and last period. For this reason, the term perimenopause can more accurately describe the period when a woman is closest to menopause because it involves a drop in hormone levels.<br \/>Doctors may also use the term 'transition to menopause' to describe a woman who is in perimenopause. In this article, we will use the terms 'pre-menopause' and 'perimenopause' interchangeably, using them with the same meaning: to describe the years leading up to the actual menopause, when the ovaries begin to reduce their production of estrogen.<br \/>Pre-menopause usually starts 3 or 4 years before a woman's body enters menopause, but in some cases, it can happen as much as 10 years before. The ovaries function during this period and release one egg each, so a woman who is in transition to menopause can still get pregnant. If you don't want this to happen, talk to your gynecologist about the options they recommend for contraception.<br \/>Premenopausal causes<br \/>Pre-menopause has a limited number of reasons. Estrogen and progesterone production start to fluctuate as a woman's body enters menopause. Low estrogen levels cause many of the changes a woman's body experiences during pre-menopause. During pre-menopause, estrogen, the primary female hormone in the body, fluctuates in levels. Because of this, a woman's menstrual cycles may be longer or shorter, and occasionally, ovulation (the release of an egg) may not take place during a period.<br \/>Premenopausal risk factors<br \/>As you know, menopause is a normal stage of life, but it can occur earlier in some women. Although it is not always very clear why menopause starts earlier, some scientific evidence suggests that certain factors may increase a woman's risk of entering pre-menopause at a younger age than would be normal. These risk factors can be:<br \/>Smoking (menopause starts 1 or 2 years earlier in women who smoke compared to non-smoking women)<br \/>Family history (women with a family history of early menopause may find that menopause starts earlier in their family too)<br \/>Oncological treatment (treatment for some cancers - chemotherapy or radiotherapy to the pelvic area - has been associated with early menopause)<br \/>Hysterectomy (if the hysterectomy removes the uterus but not the ovaries, this operation does not usually cause menopause. Although the patient will no longer menstruate, her ovaries will still produce estrogen. However, such surgery may cause menopause to set in earlier than normal).<br \/>Premenopausal symptoms<br \/>During the transition years to menopause, some subtle or not-so-subtle changes can occur in a woman's body. Premenopausal women may experience at least some of these symptoms:<br \/>heatwaves<br \/>sensitive breasts<br \/>severe premenstrual syndrome<br \/>reduced sexual desire<br \/>fatigue<br \/>irregular periods<br \/>vaginal dryness and therefore discomfort during sex<br \/>involuntary leakage of urine when coughing or sneezing<br \/>urge incontinence - an urgent need to urinate more and more often<br \/>mood swings<br \/>sleep problems<br \/>Increasingly low estrogen production can also lead to other symptoms of pre-menopause. Irregular periods are often the first symptom a woman notices in her perimenopausal years. Other symptoms of perimenopause are:<br \/>Night sweats<br \/>Night sweats are hot flashes (heat waves) that occur during the night and disturb a woman's sleep. There are, however, treatments to combat heavy night sweats, including lifestyle changes, over-the-counter remedies, hormone therapy (with estrogen plus progesterone or just estrogen pills), and prescription medication.<br \/>Problems in the vaginal area<br \/>When estrogen levels drop, the tissues in the vaginal area may lose certain properties, become less lubricated, lose elasticity, and intercourse is painful because of this.<br \/>Urinary problems<br \/>The low level of estrogen in the menopausal transition years can also create other problems: a woman is now more vulnerable to urinary tract infections or infections in the vaginal area. Loss of tissue tone in the genitourinary system can contribute to a woman's urinary incontinence.<br \/>Sexual function changes<br \/>In pre-menopause, sexual arousal and sexual desire (libido) may change. Although estrogen and progesterone are important factors that play a role in maintaining brain function, there is little evidence to differentiate the effects of aging from those related to hormonal disorders.<br \/>Premenopausal diagnosis<br \/>There is no precise test or sign that is sufficient to determine that a woman has entered pre-menopause. Your gynecologist may take many factors into account, such as your age, menstrual history, and the symptoms or changes your body is going through. <br \/>Some doctors may recommend blood tests to find out what the levels of certain hormones are, but beyond the fact that some tests help the doctor check thyroid gland function (which can affect the levels of some hormones), blood tests are rarely necessary or helpful in assessing pre-menopause.<br \/>Biofeedback can be another way of pre-menopausal diagnosis. It is non-invasive, and with the help of special devices such as NUCLEUS and ED-X, the biofeedback therapy specialist will read all the information given by the device\u2019s Matrix and interpret it for you.
